Hands-On Register Inspector Training

After receiving numerous requests, North American Transportation Consultants, Inc. (NATC) announces that it will be conducting training sessions for Registered Inspectors(RI) which will include Hands-on Training for performing Cargo Tank Test and Inspections as required in 49 CFR 180.407. These sessions will be the same as those conducted by NATC for NASA. While initially designed for Registered Inspectors qualification, these sessions are also essential to those who will perform CT facility audits for verification that cargo tanks have been properly tested, inspected and documented for their companies. Each session will include the following areas and subjects:

US DOT Basic Requirements for Registered Inspectors:

  • Review of the definition for Registered Inspectors in 171.8
  • The Basic qualifications for Registered Inspectors in 180.409.
  • CT Registration Requirements for facilities and individuals in 107.501.

US DOT Training Requirements for Registered Inspectors:

  • All Registered Inspectors are HazMat Employees. Therefore training required in 172.704 with Phase II Function Specific modified for the testing and inspection of cargo tanks is included. 
  • Cargo tank familiarization required in 180.409(a)(2).
  • Testing and Inspection forms and equipment used for each test or inspection type. Ø Types of test and inspections to be performed by vessel type and use.
  • ExternalVisualInspection o InternalVisualInspection o LiningInspection
  • LeakageTest
  • PressureTest
  • ThicknessTest

The hands-on portion of the training will include actual inspection of cargo tanks and simulated testing of vessels as required in 180.407. Discussion of the off vessel testing requirements for valves and vents will be included.

The next course will be held in Spring 2017 so check back in December for class dates. Since these are hands-on training sessions, space is very limited. Certifications will be issued for those completing the course work and exercises successfully. Attendance certificates will be issued to all others.
